Booked

Maxine has booked an Iceland trip for myself and Stephen (son-in-law). We will fly from IAH to Reykjavík on July 22/23. The tour begins in the lobby of the Icelandair Hotel Reykjavík Natura the morning of July 24 and ends in the afternoon of July 29. Stephen will fly back to IAH on July 30. I will stay one more night to explore Reykjavík and fly back to IAH on July 31.

An Idea!

I so enjoyed our Taste of the Camino de Santiago with Backroads in May 2018, that I have asked Maxine (travel agent) to look into a hiking tour of Iceland for the summer of 2018 (no Northern Lights to keep me awake at night!). Her recommendation was for a Backroads tour named "Land of Fire and Ice". It is a "multi-adventure" tour, i.e., it is multifaceted, including hiking, biking, an in-country air flight, jeep excursion and a zodiac boat cruise. It is a six day tour, essentially along the southern coast of the island. According to the flyer, it includes:

  • 18 miles of hiking (with a total 3,500 foot elevation gain)
  • 45 minute zodiac cruise
  • four hour glacier ice walk
  • 36 mile bike ride (with a 3,500 foot elevation gain)
  • a "super jeep" excursion into the back roads of the island
There are several tours available this summer...one each week. I've asked Maxine to look into one around the end of July. I have asked Stephen (son-in-law) if he would like to join me. He sounded as if he might be interested.

The tour starts at 7:45 am in the lobby of the airport hotel, Icelandair Hotel Reykjavík Natura. I believe I would want to follow the same pattern as we did for the Camino de Santiago tour, arriving day before, spending the night in the hotel. Similarly, at the end of the tour, I would stay the next two nights at the same airport hotel, explore Reykjavik the following day (the hotel is about 1/4 mile from the city center) and fly home the next day.
