Day 0: Monday July 23, 2018: Newark/Reykjavik

Missed our connection last night in Newark. We were notified we missed the flight as we taxied toward the gate. We spent 2.5 hours in line at United Customer Service only to find out there was nothing they could offer that would get us to Reykjavik in time to start the tour. We spent another hour or so trying to recover our checked luggage. We spent the rest of the night sitting in baggage claim. More than once a security person challenged us about sleeping there. Each time we assured them that, despite our best efforts, we were not sleeping.

Max found us a flight out of Newark on Icelandic Air Monday night at 8:25pm, which would arrive Tuesday morning at 5:55am. The tour is supposed to meet at 7:45am in the hotel lobby, cross the street to a domestic airport and fly over to the east coast of Iceland at 8:15am. If we miss this domestic flight, we will have to take a six hour bus trip to catch up with the tour on Day 2, missing the flight and the Zodiac cruise. Not something we want to miss.

Thanks to Max's requests, Backroads offered to have their people meet us at the Reykjavik airport and drive us to the domestic airport. This should avoid some delays. We are very tired and sore. We had a good lunch and are waiting for the Icelandic Air desk to open to check out bags. This is the only Icelandic flight out of Newark today. We expect the desk to open around 5:00pm. At least after that, we can again go through Security and settle in at the gate for the last three hour wait. It has not been a favorable start to our trip, but we are moving ahead. If we can start the tour as scheduled, we will be OK.

Steve in Baggage Claim at 4:00am
