Day 3: July 26, 2018: Glacier and Black Beach

We were warned last night that the weather forecast was for strong winds today and this might prevent our scheduled walk on the glacier. Sure enough, the winds picked up and howled throughout the night. It was blowing hard this morning and we assumed the hike was off.

Much to our surprise, at breakfast, we were told the hike was going to take place. The winds in the area of the hike were acceptable. A different company had been hired and we went to their place to have our gripons resized.

We went to Hof 1 Hotel for an excellent lunch before heading to the Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. The winds were almost enough to knock you down. I picked up my Iceland souvenirs off the beach.

After the beach, we drove three hours to the Hotel Ranga, about half way between Reynisfjara and Reykjavik. We got to our room around 6:15 pm and quickly changed to attend a 6:30 pm lecture on Iceland culture. Immediately after, we had a fine dinner.

Tomorrow, we do the Super Jeep Adventure which includes up to an eight mile hike with a 1,617 foot elevation gain. There is an afternoon optional hike of 2.3 miles.
