Day 1: July 24, 2018: Hike, Icebergs and Zodiac

We arrived at the Reykjavik Airport at 6:00am. We got off quickly, got our luggage quickly and passed through Customs quickly. A taxi requisitioned by Backroads was waiting for us outside of Customs. We arrived at the Hotel Natura Reykjavik at 7:00am and had time to cleanup and change into our hiking gear before the appointed rendezvous time of 7:45am. After checking in with one of our guides Ushi, we walked over to the domestic airport, checked our bags and boarded our plane for the trip to Höfn on the east coast.

On the way, we flew over the largest glacier in the country. The flight took about one hour.

At the Höfn airport, we packed a lunch and headed out for a 25 minute shuttle to Hoffell to start the day's hike. We climbed up to our lunch spot and savored the glacier and our lunch. The climb was 966 feet of elevation gain.

We then walked back down to the shuttles. Overall, it was a 4.1 mile trek.

We then shuttled 1.25 hours to Fjallsarlon where we took a Zodiac boat excursion to see some icebergs up close. These had broken off a glacier covering the largest volcano in Iceland and the second largest in Europe. We were told the volcano had previously erupted in the 16th century and again in the 18th century with devastating effect both times. There are reports that the volcano is showing increased signs of activity.

We got to the FossHotel Glacier Lagoon, found our luggage in our room. Bathed and changed for dinner. Still daylight at 11:00 pm.
